The SJTPO Region Overview
The SJTPO Region is made up of the four southern-most counties of New Jersey, including Atlantic, Cape May, Cumberland, and Salem counties. The Region includes 587,901 people (2006-2008 American Community Survey). This breaks down as follows: Atlantic County: 269,993, Cape May County: 96,568, Cumberland County: 155,388, and Salem County: 65,952.
The largest cities in the region (2000 Census) include Vineland city (56,271), Atlantic City city (40,517), Galloway township (31,209), Egg Harbor township (30,726), Millville city (26,847), Lower township (22,945), Bridgeton city (22,771), Hamilton township (20,499), Pleasantville city (19,012), Middle township (16,405), Ocean City city (15,378), and Pennsville township (13,194).
Major Roadways that traverse the Region include, Interstate 295, the New Jersey Turnpike, The Garden State Parkway, the Atlantic City Expressway, US Routes 9, 30, 40, and 322, and Major State Routes include 45, 47, 49, 50, 54, 55, 56, and 77. The Region is 2,341 square miles in area, of which 697 square miles, or 29.8 percent is water. The regionwide population density is 357.6 persons per square mile.
